Cross-Border Tax Tools 2026 — Compared
If you sell cross-border to the EU, US, or globally, you need software that calculates the right tax at checkout, handles multiple jurisdictions, and ideally helps with filing. There are a lot of options. Most comparison articles online are affiliate-driven fluff. This series isn’t.
Every comparison in this series uses the same criteria, scored the same way, so you can compare across tools — not just within a single head-to-head article.
The Criteria
Section titled “The Criteria”We evaluate every tool on the same 12 axes. These are the things that actually matter to a seller shipping cross-border:
| # | Criteria | What We’re Checking |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Local filing | Can the tool file your local/domestic tax returns natively, or is it calculation-only? |
| 2 | EU IOSS | Does it calculate destination-country VAT for sub-€150 B2C shipments to the EU? |
| 3 | EU OSS | Does it handle One Stop Shop for digital services or intra-EU distance selling? |
| 4 | US sales tax | Does it calculate US sales tax, track nexus thresholds, and support filing? |
| 5 | VAT calculation at checkout | Real-time, accurate tax calculation during the checkout flow — the core job. |
| 6 | Platform integrations | Which e-commerce platforms does it connect to? Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, marketplaces, ERPs? |
| 7 | Pricing model | How much does it actually cost? Per-transaction, monthly, annual contract, quote-based? |
| 8 | Setup complexity | Can a solo seller set it up in an afternoon, or does it need a developer and a sales call? |
| 9 | Reporting and records | Does it produce the reports you need for filing and audit readiness? |
| 10 | Ecosystem | What else does the tool connect to — payments, billing, invoicing, ERP, customs? |
| 11 | Support | Documentation quality, human support availability, and real-world reviews. |
| 12 | Best for | The honest verdict — who should use this tool and who shouldn’t. |
We don’t score numerically. Tax tools aren’t comparable on a 1-10 scale — a tool that’s perfect for a Shopify solo seller is terrible for a multi-entity enterprise, and vice versa. Instead, each comparison gives a clear verdict per criterion and an honest “best for” recommendation.

Quick guide to the landscape
Section titled “Quick guide to the landscape”If you use Stripe for payments, Stripe Tax is the path of least resistance. It activates in minutes and handles EU and US tax calculation on Stripe transactions. It doesn’t file returns — pair it with an IOSS intermediary and local filing software.
If you’re on Shopify, Shopify Tax now handles checkout calculation natively (since April 2025). You may still need Avalara or Quaderno for filing and multi-channel support.
If you sell digital products or SaaS, Anrok and Quaderno are purpose-built for digital tax rules (place of supply, B2B reverse charge, evidence collection).
If you’re mid-size or enterprise with an ERP, Avalara or Vertex are the only realistic options — they have the integration depth and filing breadth for complex multi-entity setups. Choose Vertex if SAP is your ERP; Avalara for most other platforms.
If you’re a small seller just starting to sell internationally, you probably need Stripe Tax or Quaderno for calculation, plus a separate IOSS intermediary for filing. Total cost: under $100/month.
What None of These Tools Do
Section titled “What None of These Tools Do”It’s worth being explicit about the gaps:
- None of them act as your IOSS intermediary. They calculate the right VAT at checkout, but filing your monthly IOSS return and remitting VAT to EU authorities requires a separate intermediary (EAS Project, SimplyVAT, AVASK, etc.). We have a separate comparison of IOSS intermediaries.
- Most don’t file local tax returns. Only Avalara, Taxually, and Vertex offer broad local filing capabilities. The rest produce reports you feed into Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent for filing.
- None of them replace an accountant. They get the numbers right. An accountant tells you what the numbers mean for your specific business.
