UK to Spain VAT Guide 2026 — Rates, IOSS & Compliance

This guide highlights what is specific to UK sellers shipping to Spain. For Spanish VAT rates (IVA), product category rates (4%, 10%, 21%), IOSS vs non-IOSS customs flows, B2B reverse charge mechanics, and Spain-specific compliance requirements (Canary Islands, Ceuta/Melilla, Verifactu), see the full guide:

Selling to Spain — VAT Rates, Rules & Compliance

Post-Brexit Customs Friction for UK Sellers

Section titled “Post-Brexit Customs Friction for UK Sellers”

Since January 2021, every shipment from Great Britain to Spain is a third-country import. Spanish customs (Aduanas) apply standard third-country processing.

Practical implications for UK sellers:

  • Parcels without IOSS are held at Aduanas. Correos (the Spanish postal service) then contacts the customer to collect 21% IVA plus a tarifa de tramitación aduanera (customs handling fee) of €5–€15.
  • Spanish consumers increasingly expect duty-free online shopping experiences. The combination of IVA and handling fees on non-IOSS parcels leads to high abandonment and return rates.
  • Spain’s customs systems have stricter NIE/NIF requirements than some other EU countries — for non-IOSS parcels, carriers often need the customer’s Spanish ID number for customs clearance.

The Canary Islands — A Major UK Seller Gotcha

Section titled “The Canary Islands — A Major UK Seller Gotcha”

The Canary Islands are among the most popular holiday and expat destinations for UK citizens, and UK sellers regularly ship there. However, the Canary Islands are outside the EU VAT area.

Do not charge standard Spanish IVA to Canary Islands customers. Local tax (IGIC) applies instead, and sales to the Canary Islands are treated as exports from your perspective.

This is particularly important because:

  • Many UK sellers have Spanish customers who list a Canary Islands address
  • Platform auto-tax settings may incorrectly apply Spanish IVA to all “Spain” addresses
  • You need a specific exemption in your store for Las Palmas, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and other Canary Islands postcodes

The same applies to Ceuta and Melilla (IPSI rather than IVA). See the full Spain guide for details.

From the UK, carriers that support IOSS electronic data transmission to Spain:

  • Royal Mail Tracked International — supports IOSS; confirm which products transmit electronically
  • DHL, DPD, UPS, FedEx — all support IOSS transmission to Spain

For high-value goods (over €150), DHL Express and FedEx DDP are the most reliable from the UK to mainland Spain.

Note: carrier services to the Canary Islands are separate from mainland Spain services, and transit times are longer. Some UK carriers treat the Canary Islands as a separate destination zone.
