Vertex vs TaxCloud for Cross-Border Sellers 2026
Vertex and TaxCloud are not natural competitors — the scope difference between them defines the entire comparison. Vertex is one of the largest enterprise indirect tax platforms in the world, covering US sales tax, global VAT, EU compliance, ERP integrations, and more. TaxCloud is a US-specific sales tax tool, one of the original SST Certified Service Providers, with a unique pricing model where filing in 24 US states is genuinely free.
For UK sellers targeting only the US market: TaxCloud is worth understanding. For UK sellers with any EU sales, or for enterprises needing global compliance infrastructure: Vertex is the platform, and TaxCloud is out of scope.
1. Local VAT / Sales Tax Filing
Section titled “1. Local VAT / Sales Tax Filing”Vertex: Full UK MTD filing capability via Vertex Cloud VAT Returns. Vertex calculates UK VAT across connected channels, produces MTD-compliant submissions, and files directly with HMRC. Handles multi-entity structures and complex VAT group returns.
TaxCloud: No UK VAT functionality at all. TaxCloud’s product boundary is US sales tax, and it does not cross it. For any UK VAT obligation — registration, calculation, or MTD filing — TaxCloud is entirely irrelevant.
Verdict: Vertex wins. TaxCloud does not compete here.
2. EU IOSS
Section titled “2. EU IOSS”Vertex: Full IOSS calculation support across all connected platforms and ERP systems. Correctly applies destination-country VAT to EU shipments under €150. Not an IOSS intermediary — a separate provider is required for monthly return filing.
TaxCloud: No IOSS support. Zero EU functionality. TaxCloud handles US sales tax exclusively.
Verdict: Vertex wins by default. TaxCloud does not compete here.
3. EU OSS
Section titled “3. EU OSS”Vertex: Full OSS calculation across Union and Non-Union schemes. Produces country-level reports. Managed filing available via partner network.
TaxCloud: No OSS support. Outside the US, TaxCloud has no functionality.
Verdict: Vertex wins by default. TaxCloud does not compete here.
4. US Sales Tax
Section titled “4. US Sales Tax”Vertex: US sales and use tax is Vertex’s founding purpose — the company has been solving this problem since 1978. Coverage spans all 50 states plus territories, with product-level taxability rules for millions of product-jurisdiction combinations. Vertex handles purchase-side use tax (what businesses owe on goods they buy from vendors who don’t charge sales tax) — a significant audit exposure for manufacturers, distributors, and large enterprises that most e-commerce-oriented tools don’t address. Vertex is an SST Certified Service Provider — free filing in 24 SST member states.
TaxCloud: This is TaxCloud’s entire product. TaxCloud is one of the original SST Certified Service Providers, incorporated specifically around the Streamlined Sales Tax programme. The SST benefit is real and significant: for the 24 SST member states, TaxCloud’s calculation and filing services are free — the states compensate the SST-certified provider, not the merchant.
For non-SST states (including California, New York, Texas, and Florida — the highest-volume markets), TaxCloud charges either a small percentage of sales tax collected (typically 3–5% of the tax amount) or flat monthly tier pricing for lower-volume sellers.
TaxCloud’s US coverage includes address-level calculation, automatic economic nexus detection and monitoring, state-by-state reporting, filing management, and exemption certificate management. For B2B US sellers whose customers are tax-exempt, exemption certificate handling is a meaningful operational feature.
Verdict: Both are capable on US sales tax. TaxCloud’s SST free-filing model is a genuine cost advantage for sellers with significant volume in the 24 SST states. Vertex’s greater depth on purchase-side use tax, complex product taxability, and ERP-embedded workflows is the differentiator at enterprise scale. For a UK seller whose only compliance need is US e-commerce sales tax, TaxCloud’s pricing model is compelling.
5. VAT Calculation at Checkout
Section titled “5. VAT Calculation at Checkout”Vertex: Real-time API-based tax calculation at the point of transaction across all connected platforms — ERP, checkout, order management, and billing systems simultaneously. Handles global tax regimes: US sales tax, EU VAT, UK VAT, GST. EU VAT ID validation and reverse charge included.
TaxCloud: Calculates US sales tax in real time via API. You pass TaxCloud a cart of items and a customer address, and it returns the applicable sales tax rate and amount. The API is well-documented and straightforward. TaxCloud integrates natively with WooCommerce, Magento, and BigCommerce.
What TaxCloud does not calculate: VAT, GST, or any non-US tax. A UK customer checking out from your store will have no tax applied by TaxCloud — it simply doesn’t have data outside US sales tax regimes.
Verdict: Not directly comparable in scope. Vertex calculates global tax across all major regimes. TaxCloud calculates US sales tax only. For UK sellers with mixed EU and US traffic, TaxCloud’s inability to handle EU VAT is a decisive limitation.
6. Platform Integrations
Section titled “6. Platform Integrations”Vertex:
- SAP — Gold Partner certified; deepest SAP integration of any tax platform
- Oracle — native connectors for Oracle Fusion, EBS, Oracle Commerce
- Microsoft Dynamics 365 — native connector
- Salesforce — CPQ and Revenue Cloud integration
- NetSuite — available connector
- Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento — connectors available
- Custom APIs — Vertex O Series API
TaxCloud:
- WooCommerce — native plugin, works well
- Magento / Adobe Commerce — native plugin
- BigCommerce — native app
- Shopify — limited; Shopify’s own tax system takes precedence, TaxCloud integration is partial and primarily for SST compliance purposes
- Custom stores — API integration; documentation is adequate
- Amazon, eBay, Etsy — not directly supported; marketplace facilitator laws mean these platforms handle tax collection themselves in most US states
TaxCloud’s integration library covers the major US-market e-commerce platforms competently. It does not integrate with ERP systems or EU-centric platforms.
Verdict: Vertex covers enterprise ERP systems that TaxCloud has never addressed. TaxCloud covers WooCommerce and Magento well for US-focused stores. For a UK seller running WooCommerce and selling US-only, TaxCloud’s native plugin is more practical than a Vertex implementation.
7. Pricing Model
Section titled “7. Pricing Model”Vertex: Quote-based. Enterprise pricing typically starting at $30,000–$100,000+/year, excluding implementation costs. Not designed for SMBs.
TaxCloud: SST states: free. The 24 SST member states compensate TaxCloud directly — there is no per-transaction fee and no monthly fee for basic calculation and filing in those states.
Non-SST states: approximately 3–5% of the sales tax collected, or flat plan tiers starting at $9–$19/month for lower-volume sellers.
The catch: the largest US markets by revenue — California, New York, Texas, Florida — are not SST members. Sellers concentrated in those states see less benefit from TaxCloud’s free filing model than the headline suggests.
Verdict: TaxCloud wins on US sales tax cost for sellers with meaningful SST-state volume. Vertex’s pricing reflects a completely different scope and buyer profile. For a UK seller who only needs US sales tax compliance at reasonable cost, TaxCloud’s pricing model is genuinely compelling — Vertex is orders of magnitude more expensive for the same US-only use case.
8. Setup Complexity
Section titled “8. Setup Complexity”Vertex: Very high. Enterprise implementation project requiring a certified Vertex partner, formal scoping, product taxability mapping, ERP configuration, and multi-month deployment. Not realistic for any business without dedicated implementation resources.
TaxCloud: Low for US-only setup. Creating a TaxCloud account, connecting it to WooCommerce or BigCommerce, and completing SST registration is straightforward and well-documented. The SST registration process involves signing up through TaxCloud, which takes a few days for some states. Product classification using TaxCloud’s product codes is a one-time exercise. For sellers with simple product catalogues, setup is measured in hours.
Verdict: TaxCloud is dramatically simpler to deploy for US sales tax. Vertex requires an enterprise implementation. If US sales tax compliance is your primary objective and you’re on WooCommerce or BigCommerce, TaxCloud’s setup is far more practical.
9. Reporting and Records
Section titled “9. Reporting and Records”Vertex: Enterprise-grade audit reporting covering transaction-level records, jurisdiction summaries, exemption certificate trails, rate history, and a tax analytics layer. Built for multi-country, multi-entity audit scenarios.
TaxCloud: US sales tax reports by state with transaction-level detail. Filing summaries for each state return. For SST states where TaxCloud files on your behalf, it retains filing records and confirmation documentation — valuable in a US state audit. TaxCloud does not produce EU VAT, IOSS, or UK VAT reports.
Verdict: Not directly comparable. Vertex covers global audit reporting. TaxCloud’s reports are US-focused and filing-ready — including the audit trail for SST-state returns, which is meaningful protection in a US state audit. For UK sellers needing reports across EU and US jurisdictions, TaxCloud covers only a subset.
10. Ecosystem / Wider Product
Section titled “10. Ecosystem / Wider Product”Vertex:
Vertex covers the full enterprise indirect tax function: US sales and use tax (including purchase-side), global VAT and GST, e-invoicing (EU ViDA), cross-border customs and HS classification, and property tax. For large enterprises, Vertex is the indirect tax backbone — not just a US compliance tool.
TaxCloud:
TaxCloud’s product scope is US sales tax compliance, period. Within that scope: exemption certificate management (important for B2B US sellers with tax-exempt customers), SST registration handling, state filing management, and audit support documentation. For businesses with significant US B2B sales, exemption certificate management is a meaningful operational feature.
Verdict: Vertex’s ecosystem is a comprehensive enterprise platform. TaxCloud is a focused US compliance tool. The ecosystems don’t overlap and neither competes with the other’s core use case.
11. Support
Section titled “11. Support”Vertex: Enterprise support with tiered account management. Vertex University for training and certification. Deep expertise through the certified implementation partner network.
TaxCloud: Email support with adequate response times for a platform of its scale. TaxCloud is a smaller company, which typically means more personal but less 24/7 coverage. For complex US sales tax questions — product taxability edge cases, SST compliance nuances, exemption certificate requirements — TaxCloud’s support team has genuine US sales tax domain knowledge. This specialisation is an advantage for sellers focused on US compliance specifically.
Verdict: Vertex wins on enterprise support infrastructure. TaxCloud wins on US sales tax domain expertise and personalised response for SMBs. Neither has a clear advantage in its own context.
