TaxCloud vs Quaderno for Cross-Border Sellers 2026

TaxCloud and Quaderno are not natural competitors — their scopes barely overlap. TaxCloud is a US-specific sales tax platform, one of the original SST Certified Service Providers, with free filing in 24 US states. Quaderno is a payment-processor-agnostic tax automation platform covering EU VAT, UK VAT, and US sales tax across multiple sales channels. For UK sellers, that asymmetry defines the comparison.

If your cross-border selling is exclusively to US customers, TaxCloud is a cost-effective specialist worth serious consideration. If you sell to EU customers — or to both EU and US — Quaderno is the only tool here that covers both sides of the obligation.

TaxCloud: No UK VAT functionality at all. TaxCloud’s product boundary is US sales tax — it does not calculate, report, or file UK VAT under any circumstances. This is not a limitation so much as a product boundary: TaxCloud was built for the US Streamlined Sales Tax programme and has never extended beyond it.

Quaderno: Does not submit UK VAT returns directly to HMRC via MTD, but it gets meaningfully closer than TaxCloud. Quaderno calculates UK VAT on sales across all connected channels — Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe, PayPal, and others — and generates a structured UK VAT report. That report is designed to hand to your accountant or import into Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent for the actual MTD submission. Quaderno integrates directly with Xero, so VAT data can flow into your filing software without manual exports.

Verdict: Quaderno wins. TaxCloud has zero relevance for UK VAT. Quaderno provides the data and structured reports needed for UK MTD filing, even though the submission itself sits in your accounting software.

TaxCloud: No IOSS support. TaxCloud handles US sales tax exclusively — it has no functionality for EU VAT, IOSS, or any non-US tax regime.

Quaderno: Supports IOSS calculation across connected platforms. Once you configure the IOSS jurisdiction in Quaderno (selecting the “imported goods” option), Quaderno applies destination-country VAT rates to EU shipments under €150 and generates a monthly IOSS report aggregating data from all connected channels — Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe, PayPal. Like other calculation tools, Quaderno is not an IOSS intermediary and does not file the monthly return — that requires a separate provider such as Taxually, SimplyVAT, or EAS Project. Quaderno also monitors your approach to IOSS registration thresholds and alerts you before the obligation kicks in.

Verdict: Quaderno wins by default. TaxCloud has no EU functionality. For UK sellers shipping physical goods to EU consumers, Quaderno covers the calculation and reporting half of IOSS; you still need a separate intermediary for the filing half.

TaxCloud: No OSS support. Outside the US, TaxCloud does not function.

Quaderno: Full OSS support, including Union and Non-Union schemes. For UK businesses selling digital services to EU consumers, Non-Union OSS is the applicable scheme — Quaderno applies correct destination-country VAT rates and generates a quarterly OSS return formatted for EU portal filing. Quaderno also offers managed OSS filing as a service, meaning they can submit the return on your behalf rather than just providing the data. This puts Quaderno meaningfully ahead of calculation-only tools on OSS coverage.

Verdict: Quaderno wins by default and clearly. TaxCloud cannot address any EU VAT obligation. Quaderno covers OSS calculation, structured reporting, and optional managed filing.

TaxCloud: This is TaxCloud’s entire product. TaxCloud is one of the original SST Certified Service Providers — free calculation and filing in the 24 SST member states, where the state governments themselves compensate TaxCloud. For non-SST states (including California, New York, Texas, and Florida), TaxCloud charges either a small percentage of sales tax collected (typically 3–5% of the tax amount) or flat monthly tier pricing for lower-volume sellers.

TaxCloud’s US coverage includes address-level calculation, automatic economic nexus detection and monitoring, state-by-state reporting, filing management, and exemption certificate management. For B2B US sellers with tax-exempt customers, exemption certificate handling is a meaningful operational feature. The SST free-filing benefit is most valuable for sellers with significant volume in SST member states — smaller-population states like Indiana, Nevada, and Minnesota, not the highest-revenue markets like California or Texas.

Quaderno: Also covers US sales tax — automatic calculation once nexus states are configured, nexus threshold monitoring, and state-level reporting. Quaderno offers managed US sales tax filing as a service, meaning you can have Quaderno file state returns on your behalf rather than exporting reports and filing manually. Quaderno’s US sales tax is functional and appropriate for most SMB e-commerce sellers, though it lacks the SST free-filing advantage that TaxCloud provides for eligible states.

Verdict: Both are capable for e-commerce US sales tax. TaxCloud’s SST free-filing model is a genuine cost advantage for sellers with significant sales in SST member states. Quaderno’s managed filing service is a practical differentiator for sellers who want US returns handled for them without a separate US-specialist tool. For UK sellers who also have EU obligations, Quaderno’s integrated US + EU coverage avoids the need to run two separate tools.

TaxCloud: Calculates US sales tax in real time via API. You pass TaxCloud a cart of items and a customer address, and it returns the applicable sales tax rate and amount. The API is well-documented and integrates natively with WooCommerce, Magento, and BigCommerce. What TaxCloud does not do: calculate VAT, GST, or any non-US tax. EU or UK customers checking out from your store will have no tax applied by TaxCloud.

Quaderno: Calculates VAT and sales tax at checkout across all connected platforms and payment processors. If you run Shopify with Stripe payments, WooCommerce with PayPal, and direct invoicing via GoCardless, Quaderno covers all three. Quaderno’s checkout calculation works at the store level rather than the payment processor level — it is not constrained to a single payment channel. Quaderno also generates compliant VAT invoices automatically for every transaction, satisfying the B2B requirement for a proper VAT invoice with all legally required fields.

Verdict: Quaderno wins on scope — it calculates global tax across EU VAT, UK VAT, and US sales tax from a single platform. TaxCloud calculates US sales tax only. For UK sellers with any EU or UK traffic, TaxCloud’s checkout engine is inadequate.

TaxCloud:

  • WooCommerce — native plugin, works well
  • Magento / Adobe Commerce — native plugin
  • BigCommerce — native app
  • Shopify — limited; Shopify’s native tax system takes precedence and TaxCloud’s integration is partial, primarily for SST compliance purposes
  • Custom stores — API integration; documentation is functional but less polished than Quaderno’s
  • Amazon, eBay, Etsy — marketplace facilitator laws mean these platforms handle tax collection themselves in most US states, making this gap largely irrelevant in practice

Quaderno:

  • Shopify — native app, payment-processor-agnostic; handles tax reporting and invoicing regardless of how payments are set up
  • WooCommerce — native plugin covering calculation, invoicing, and reporting (Classic Checkout only; Checkout Blocks not yet supported)
  • Stripe — direct integration for Stripe-billed transactions
  • PayPal, Braintree, GoCardless, Square — all natively supported
  • Amazon FBA — supported for transaction import and reporting
  • Xero — direct integration for passing VAT data to MTD accounting software
  • Kajabi, Teachable, Thinkific — digital product platforms, making Quaderno strong for course creators and SaaS
  • Zapier — for custom setups

Verdict: Quaderno wins on integration breadth. TaxCloud covers WooCommerce and Magento well for US-focused stores; Quaderno covers the same platforms plus Shopify, PayPal, GoCardless, and accounting software. For multi-channel sellers or those using payment processors other than the major US e-commerce defaults, Quaderno is substantially more complete.

TaxCloud: SST states: free. The 24 SST member states compensate TaxCloud directly — no per-transaction fee, no monthly fee for calculation and filing in those states.

Non-SST states: approximately 3–5% of the sales tax collected, or flat plan tiers starting at $9–$19/month for lower-volume sellers. The catch: the largest US markets by revenue — California, New York, Texas, Florida — are not SST members. Sellers concentrated in those states see less benefit from TaxCloud’s free filing model than the headline suggests.

Quaderno: Flat monthly fee based on transaction volume, regardless of order value:

PlanMonthly feeTransactions included
Startup$49/month250
Business$99/month1,000
Growth$149/month2,500
EnterpriseCustom2,500+

All plans include unlimited integrations, unlimited users, automatic invoicing, and filing/reporting across all connected channels. Overage is handled at $0.25 per additional transaction rather than a hard cutoff. Managed filing (OSS, US returns) is available as an add-on service.

Verdict: TaxCloud is potentially cheaper for pure US sales tax if your volume skews toward SST member states. Quaderno’s flat fee is predictable and covers EU VAT, UK VAT, and US sales tax in one subscription — significantly more scope than TaxCloud’s US-only offering. For UK sellers with both EU and US obligations, Quaderno’s pricing reflects a more complete solution.

TaxCloud: Low for US-only setup. Creating a TaxCloud account, connecting it to WooCommerce or BigCommerce, and completing SST registration is well-documented and straightforward. SST registration involves signing up through TaxCloud — a few days for some states. Product classification using TaxCloud’s product codes is a one-time exercise. For simple product catalogues, setup is measured in hours.

Quaderno: Low to medium. Quaderno is designed for self-serve use and is more accessible than enterprise tools, but setup involves connecting each platform and payment processor, configuring jurisdictions, setting product types, and optionally setting up invoicing templates. Quaderno offers a personalised onboarding call for all new users — useful for getting configuration right from the start.

One documented gotcha: do not connect a payment processor directly to Quaderno if it is already connected through your store (e.g. don’t connect both Shopify and a separate Shopify Stripe account). Duplicating the data source creates duplicate invoices. The documentation covers this, but it catches people out.

Verdict: Both are reasonably low complexity for their respective use cases. TaxCloud is faster to activate for US-only; Quaderno’s setup is more deliberate but appropriate to the broader scope it covers.

TaxCloud: US sales tax reports by state with transaction-level detail. Filing summaries for each state return. For SST states where TaxCloud files on your behalf, it retains filing records and confirmation documentation — the complete audit trail for US state audits. TaxCloud does not produce EU VAT, IOSS, or UK VAT reports of any kind.

Quaderno: Multi-channel, multi-jurisdiction reporting is one of Quaderno’s strongest features:

  • UK VAT report structured for accountant/MTD use
  • EU VAT OSS report by country and rate, formatted for OSS portal filing
  • IOSS report by EU country for monthly return
  • US sales tax report by state
  • Zero-amount reports for periods with no taxable transactions (important for compliance — a zero-return still needs to be filed)

All reports pull data from every connected channel into a single view. Quaderno also flags “zero reports” — periods with no taxable transactions in a registered jurisdiction — which many sellers overlook and which can trigger notices from tax authorities.

Verdict: Not directly comparable. TaxCloud’s US-focused reports are filing-ready with a full audit trail for SST-state returns. Quaderno’s reports span more jurisdictions, are structured for actual filing use, and handle edge cases like zero-period returns. For UK sellers who need reports across EU and US, TaxCloud covers only a subset; Quaderno covers the full picture.

TaxCloud:

TaxCloud’s product scope is US sales tax compliance, period. Within that scope: exemption certificate management (important for B2B US sellers with tax-exempt customers), SST registration handling, state filing management, and audit support documentation. There is no invoicing, no billing, no payment processing, no global tax coverage. For businesses with significant US B2B sales, exemption certificate management is a meaningful feature that Quaderno handles less robustly.

Quaderno:

Quaderno is a tax-first platform with a broader product around it:

  • Automatic invoicing — compliant VAT invoices generated and sent for every transaction, in the customer’s language, branded to your store. This is a meaningful compliance feature for B2B sales where a proper VAT invoice is legally required.
  • Quaderno Checkout — a hosted payment and checkout page for digital product sellers who don’t want a full e-commerce platform.
  • E-invoicing support — Quaderno supports mandatory e-invoicing formats including Peppol (Belgium), Verifactu and SII (Spain), and NF525 (France). EU e-invoicing mandates are rolling out country by country through 2026–2028 under ViDA.
  • Managed filing — OSS returns and US state returns filed on your behalf.
  • Registration services — Quaderno handles new tax registrations when you cross thresholds, not just alerting you to them.

Verdict: Quaderno’s product ecosystem is substantially richer for tax-specific needs. TaxCloud’s depth on US B2B exemption certificates is a genuine differentiator for businesses with meaningful US wholesale sales. For everything else, Quaderno covers more ground.

TaxCloud: Email support with adequate response times. TaxCloud is a smaller company, which typically means more personal responses but less 24/7 coverage. For US sales tax questions — product taxability edge cases, SST compliance nuances, exemption certificate requirements — TaxCloud’s support team has genuine US sales tax domain knowledge that a generalist tool cannot match.

Quaderno: Human support with VAT compliance expertise and a personalised onboarding call for all new users. Quaderno is described as providing access to “real human experts on taxes and Quaderno.” Response times and quality are consistently mentioned favourably in reviews. Quaderno’s support covers both US and EU tax questions, which TaxCloud cannot match for the EU side.

Verdict: TaxCloud wins on US sales tax domain depth. Quaderno wins on breadth of coverage and the structured onboarding experience. For UK sellers with EU obligations, Quaderno’s support team is more directly relevant across the full compliance picture.

Choose TaxCloud if:

  • Your cross-border selling is exclusively to US customers — no EU sales
  • You sell on WooCommerce, Magento, or BigCommerce and want native US sales tax integration
  • You have meaningful sales in SST member states and want to benefit from free calculation and filing
  • You sell B2B to US customers and need exemption certificate management at low cost
  • US sales tax cost is your primary concern and you don’t need EU or UK VAT coverage

Choose Quaderno if:

  • You sell to EU customers as well as US — the most common UK cross-border profile
  • You need compliant VAT invoices generated automatically for every transaction
  • You want a single platform covering UK VAT reports, EU IOSS calculation, EU OSS, and US sales tax
  • You use multiple payment processors or sales channels (Shopify + PayPal, WooCommerce + Stripe + GoCardless)
  • You want OSS or US sales tax returns filed for you without managing a separate filing service
  • You’re thinking ahead to EU e-invoicing mandates (ViDA rollout through 2026–2028)

Neither if:

  • You need UK MTD filing — use Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent
  • You need an IOSS intermediary — neither tool provides that; use Taxually, EAS Project, or SimplyVAT
  • You’re an enterprise with ERP integration needs — consider Avalara or Vertex
